Every iteration of this cycle is known as a rosary decade. During each decade prayer series, Catholic believers contemplate one of the Mysteries of the Rosary, which focus on different aspects of the lives and tribulations of Jesus and Mary. The four series of Mysteries associated with the rosary are the joyful mysteries, the sorrowful mysteries, the glorious mysteries, and the optional luminous mysteries, which Pope John Paul II instituted in 2002.
